HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE  :  

The ₹5 commemorative coin was issued by the Government of India to mark the Birth Centenary of Rani Gaidinliu, a prominent freedom fighter and spiritual leader from the northeastern state of Manipur. Rani Gaidinliu was a spiritual and political leader of the Zeliangrong Naga tribe who became a prominent leader in the struggle against British colonial rule in Nagaland. She was only a teenager when she led a fierce rebellion against British oppression and became the youngest ever woman to be imprisoned by the British at the age of 16. She was a follower of the Heraka movement, which was founded by her spiritual leader, Jadonang, and she later took up his leadership after his death. Rani Gaidinliu’s courage and leadership made her a symbol of resistance and a hero for the Naga people and India as a whole. After her release from British imprisonment, she continued to work for the Naga cause and the upliftment of her people. The Government of India recognized her contributions to the Indian freedom struggle by conferring her with the Padma Bhushan in 1993.
